Sri Lanka to Introduce Digital National Identity Cards

Sri Lanka is preparing to introduce digital National Identity Cards (NICs) as part of the Government’s wider programme to expand the country’s digital economy.

Digital Economy Deputy Minister Eranga Weeraratne said the first digital ID card is expected to be issued within the next few months, with the Government aiming to launch the full digital identification system by August next year.

“We are going to the point where the first digital ID will be issued within this year,” Weeraratne said, highlighting the Government’s efforts to accelerate digitalisation.

According to the Deputy Minister, the new digital identification system is expected to eventually replace the existing identity cards currently used by the public.

The Government plans to gradually bring all 17 million people in the country into the digital identification system over a period of approximately two years after the full system is introduced.

The initiative forms part of the Government’s broader digital economy programme and is intended to transition Sri Lanka from its existing NIC system to a digital identification platform.

The planned rollout is expected to take place in stages, beginning with the issuance of the first digital IDs and eventually extending the system across the country.
