Two Thai nationals were arrested at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) today (09) while allegedly attempting to smuggle “Kush” cannabis and “Hashish” worth over Rs. 51 million into Sri Lanka.
The suspects were arrested by officers of the Sri Lanka Customs Narcotics Control Unit at the BIA arrival terminal in Katunayake after they attempted to pass through the “Green Channel,” designated for passengers with nothing to declare.
The suspects, aged 23 and 39, are Thai nationals employed as butchers at a meat market in Thailand.
They had arrived in Sri Lanka at around midnight from Bangkok aboard Thai Airways flight TG-307.
During an inspection of their luggage, customs officers discovered 4 kilograms and 496 grams of “Kush” cannabis concealed inside 16 vitamin containers.
A further 641 grams of “Hashish” was found wrapped in polythene and disguised externally to resemble blackcurrant paste.
The total value of the seized narcotics has been estimated at Rs. 51,370,000.
The two suspects and the seized narcotics have been handed over to officers of the Katunayake Airport Police Narcotic Bureau for further investigations.
