Euro 8 Million Grant Agreement Between Sri Lanka and the EU

The Sri Lankan government has signed a major grant agreement with the European Union (EU) to launch a new project aimed at strengthening sustainable economic recovery through improved biodiversity and solid waste management.

On behalf of Sri Lanka, the agreement was signed today (23) by Dr. Harsha Suriyapperuma, Secretary to the Ministry of Finance, Economic Stabilization, and National Policies, and on behalf of the EU by Carmen Moreno, the EU Ambassador to Sri Lanka.

The project, jointly designed by the Ministry of Public Administration, Provincial Councils and Local Government, the Ministry of Environment, and the EU, will be funded with a grant of EUR 8 million from the EU, according to the Department of External Resources.

It will support biodiversity conservation by restoring degraded ecosystems, introducing targeted conservation strategies, and promoting sustainable land use practices.

At the same time, it will address the growing need for solid waste management systems, contributing to environmental protection and better public health.

This project is also in line with the government’s national policy statement “A Thriving Nation – A Beautiful Life”, which highlights the urgent need to balance economic development with environmental sustainability.

The partnership with the EU marks an important milestone in strengthening efforts to build a greener, more balanced economy for Sri Lanka.
