Agriculture Minister returns to the North after four decades

The farmers in the North who supplied rice, potatoes, onions, vegetables and fruits to a self-sufficient Sri Lanka had collapsed due to the three decade long war that annihilated the economy of the North.

As such, Minister of Agriculture, Mahindananda Aluthgamage, is scheduled to meet the farmers of the Northern province tomorrow (15), with the sole aim of reviving the agricultural sector in the North.

A mobile service will also be launched so that the farmers would be able to discuss their issues directly.

"It has been more than four decades since a Minister of Agriculture of this country has taken a concerted effort to revive the agricultural sector in the North," an official of the Agriculture Ministry observed. It also helps that the Minister is fluent in Tamil so that he may address the farmers directly," he added.
