Choka Malli sworn in as MP amidst protests

Newly elected MP Premalal Jayasekera alias Choka Malli, who is on death row, was sworn in as a parliamentarian in the ninth parliament today.

Opposition MPs raised objections over the swearing in of a convicted individual as a legislator.

The Court of Appeal yesterday granted permission for Jayasekera to attend parliament. Jayasekera's lawyers had filed a petition before the Court of Appeal to permit the newly elected MP attend parliament.

Chief Opposition Whip Lakshman Kiriella raised objections outlining the relevant legal clauses that prevent a convicted individual from being sworn in as a MP.
