Schools Across Sri Lanka Reopen as Second Term Begins; Uniform Fabric Distribution Completed

Schools across Sri Lanka resumed academic activities today, April 20, as the second school term for 2026 officially commenced in all government and government-approved private Sinhala and Tamil schools.

The Ministry of Education also announced that Muslim schools have begun the fourth stage of the first school term from today.

The reopening follows the conclusion of the second phase of the first school term on April 10. Schools remained closed from April 11 to April 19 in observance of the Sinhala and Tamil New Year holidays.

According to the Ministry, the newly commenced second term will continue until July 24, 2026.

In a separate announcement, the Ministry confirmed the successful completion of the distribution of school uniform fabric for the year 2026. The entire stock, donated as a grant by the Government of the People’s Republic of China, has now been handed over to students and educational institutions across the country.

The donation included a total of 11.484 million metres of fabric, intended for students in government and government-assisted schools. The distribution also covered student monks, nuns, and learners in government-approved Pirivenas.

Officials stated that uniform materials have been successfully distributed to 4,418,404 students, ensuring that children across the island are prepared for the new school term.

The completion of both the school reopening process and the nationwide uniform distribution marks a significant step in supporting students as they begin the next phase of their academic year.
