Defense Secretary General (Retd) Kamal Gunaratne has accepted that the country is in the midst of an environmental crisis.
At a meeting with government officials today, the Defense Secretary said that deforestation was taking place at a rapid rate causing severe damage to the environment.
He also observed that when loggers are apprehended by the armed forces, they produce valid permits that allow them to carry out such acts.
Therefore, he said that he was perplexed as to how such permits have been issued and noted that the process of issuing such permits needs to be reviewed.
He further said that he had briefed the President and the government in this regard.
