The El Niño phenomenon has intensified, with its peak expected to occur earlier than previously forecast, Environment Minister Dr. Dammika Patabendi warned.
Speaking at a special media briefing held at the Department of Government Information on the possible impact of El Niño on Sri Lanka, the Minister said the phenomenon is now expected to reach its peak around November.
Dr. Patabendi said Sri Lanka could experience severe dry weather conditions during July, August and September, followed by the possibility of heavy rainfall from October to December.
He emphasized that El Niño is a global climatic phenomenon and not a condition affecting Sri Lanka alone. The Minister said steps are being taken to strengthen coordination among government institutions and media organizations to prepare for possible impacts.
Warning that changing weather patterns could lead to severe drought conditions, Dr. Patabendi called on the public to support measures taken to manage the situation.
He also urged people to use water and electricity responsibly, noting that extreme heat and drought could affect livelihoods and create challenges, including potential job losses in vulnerable sectors.
