A firearm was discovered inside a house during a special inspection carried out as part of the National Dengue Control Programme in Pelawatte, Battaramulla.
The inspection was conducted yesterday (22) by Public Health Inspectors (PHIs) attached to the Battaramulla Medical Officer of Health (MOH) Office, with support from the Sri Lanka Army, Sri Lanka Air Force, Sri Lanka Police, and the Sri Lanka Red Cross.
Officials found the firearm while inspecting a residence that was reported to be in an extremely unhygienic condition and where a large number of dogs were kept. Live mosquito larvae were also detected at the premises during the inspection.
Following the discovery, police took custody of the firearm and arrested the female homeowner in connection with the incident.
Meanwhile, another incident was reported during the dengue inspection programme when a homeowner allegedly obstructed PHIs carrying out their duties at a residence where mosquito larvae were found. A heated verbal exchange reportedly took place during the incident.
Legal action has been initiated against 13 individuals identified as maintaining premises with mosquito breeding sites. Cases are expected to be filed before the Kaduwela Magistrate’s Court.
Health authorities have urged the public to take immediate steps to eliminate mosquito breeding locations and cooperate with dengue control officials to prevent the further spread of dengue.
