Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya has held a bilateral meeting with Yvette Cooper during an official visit to the United Kingdom aimed at strengthening diplomatic and economic ties.
The Prime Minister was accompanied by Sri Lanka’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom Nimal Senadheera and officials from the Sri Lankan High Commission.
Dr. Amarasuriya is currently in the UK to participate in the 43rd Commonwealth of Learning (COL) Board of Governors Meeting 2026.
During the discussions, the Prime Minister expressed Sri Lanka’s appreciation for UK support in the aftermath of Cyclone Ditwah, including ongoing assistance in rebuilding and recovery efforts, according to a statement from the Office of the Prime Minister.
She also acknowledged the United Kingdom’s role in facilitating increased bilateral trade and export opportunities for Sri Lanka.
The Prime Minister briefed the UK delegation on Sri Lanka’s recent economic developments, policy priorities, commitment to human rights and reconciliation, and the country’s positive growth outlook.
Both sides exchanged views on global geopolitical developments, challenges in the energy sector, and the importance of strengthening regional connectivity and long-term energy security.
The discussions also highlighted the need to enhance structured academic mobility frameworks while ensuring fairness, clarity, and integrity in migration systems.
The two parties reaffirmed their commitment to further strengthening bilateral cooperation in areas of mutual interest, signalling continued engagement between Sri Lanka and the United Kingdom.
