The south-west monsoon is gradually becoming established over Sri Lanka, bringing widespread showers, thundershowers and strong winds to several parts of the country, according to the Department of Meteorology.
Weather officials said showers or thundershowers will occur at times today (20) in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and North-western provinces, as well as in the districts of Galle, Matara, Kandy and Nuwara-Eliya.
Fairly heavy rainfall exceeding 50 mm is expected in some areas within these regions, the Met. Department noted.
Several spells of showers are also forecast for the Northern Province and the districts of Anuradhapura and Hambantota.
Meanwhile, isolated showers or thundershowers may develop in parts of the Uva Province and in the Ampara and Batticaloa districts after 2.00 p.m.
The department further warned that fairly strong winds of around 30 to 40 kmph can be expected at times over the western slopes of the central hills and across the Northern, North-central, North-western and Southern provinces.
Authorities have urged the public to take necessary precautions to reduce the risk of damage caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers as monsoon conditions continue to strengthen over the island.
