CID and SLCERT Launch Investigations Into Alleged Cyberattack on Public Administration Ministry Website

A formal complaint has been lodged with the Criminal Investigation Department over an apparent cyberattack targeting the official website of the Ministry of Public Administration, Minister Chandana Abeyrathne confirmed.

According to the Minister, the complaint was filed through the intervention of the Ministry Secretary following reports that the website had been subjected to a cyber breach. It is alleged that those behind the attack attempted to auction data obtained from the site for financial gain.

Despite the seriousness of the incident, Minister Abeyrathne clarified that no highly sensitive information had been compromised. Based on the reports currently available, only general public information appears to have been accessed by third parties.

In response, the CID has been tasked with carrying out a full investigation to identify those responsible. At the same time, the Sri Lanka Computer Emergency Readiness Team has launched a separate technical inquiry into the breach.

Speaking on the matter, Charuka Damunupola stated that the organisation is also conducting a technical investigation into a separate incident involving the diversion of USD 2.5 million in Finance Ministry funds to a third party during a foreign debt repayment made by the Treasury.

He further noted that while SLCERT is focused on examining the technical details and identifying the root causes of both breaches, the CID is leading efforts to trace and apprehend the individuals involved.

The twin investigations are expected to shed further light on the nature of the cyber incidents and the extent of any unauthorized access.
