Hirunika harassed by Gotabaya's supporters

United National Party (UNP) MP Hirunika Premachandra while denying reports that she was trying to forcibly enter the office of the Elections Commission yesterday (7) says a group of Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) presidential candidate, Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s supporters had behaved in an undignified manner.
Premachandra said she would complain about the manner in which the SLPP supporters behaved to the Elections Commission as well as the Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP).

She told a news conference at the main operations office of the Democratic National Front (DNF) presidential candidate, Sajith Premadasa at Vauxhall Street that she had faced the incident when her vehicle had by mistake traveled towards a group of Rajapaksa supporters when she was heading towards the Elections Commission office to congratulate Premadasa after he handed over nominations.

Premachandra expressed her dismay at the behavior of the Rajapaksa supporters as a woman and a parliamentarian.

“Some websites yesterday said I tried to enter the election office by force and the crowds started jeering at me when I was turned away. This was totally false as I was misdirected by senior police officers. My vehicle got stuck in the traffic and then I asked some police officers as to how I could get to the election office without a problem and they escorted my vehicle towards a large crowd of SLPP supporters who jeered at me and shouted at me in obscene language,” she said.
“I also blame my personal security officers as they too did not find out the correct route to avoid the crowd and traffic,” she added.

Former TID officer implicated in Lasantha's murder

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) is to initiate legal action against former Terrorist Investigation Division (TID) OIC Prasanna Alwis for allegedly concealing evidence linked to the investigations conducted into the murder of The Sunday Leader Editor-in-Chief Lasantha Wickrematunge in January 2009.

Police sources have said that legal action was being initiated based on information uncovered that there was no progress in the murder investigation from 2010-2015 when the case was handled by the former TID OIC.

While the CID investigation into the murder had uncovered many leads, the case has been quite dormant after the TID had taken over the probe in 2010.

The CID investigations revealed that after the TID took over investigations no progress had been made until the case was handed back to the CID in 2015.

Petitioners to file SC appeal on Gota's citizenship case

The two civil society activists who filed the writ petition before the Court of Appeal questioning the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) presidential candidate Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s Sri Lankan citizenship is to look at appealing the verdict after perusing the reasons for the initial dismissal of the case by the Court of Appeal.

One of the petitioners, Chandragupta Thenuwara said the petitioners were awaiting the court’s reasons for dismissing the case on Friday (4).

“We were not given reasons. The court only gave the verdict of dismissal. I’m of the opinion that once we receive the reasons, we will talk with our lawyers and appeal the verdict,” he has said.

He further noted that he was confident that the petitioners did have a valid case against Gotabaya Rajapaksa and his citizenship.

“From how the written submissions and the argument went, it was clear that we had a strong case. It is puzzling why the case was dismissed. We shall wait and see what reasons the court provides for dismissing the case and then take the necessary steps,” he has told the media, adding that there was still time to achieve a different legal outcome.

He added that if the evidence they have prove correct and Rajapaksa was allowed to contest, it would have serious implications for the country.
