Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, who is currently receiving treatment in hospital, has reportedly sent a letter containing specific remarks to his son, Member of Parliament Namal Rajapaksa, who is also currently held in remand custody.
The contents of the letter, which was drafted by a secretary based on statements by Mahinda Rajapaksa, have not been fully disclosed to the media.
The former President emphasised to his son that he should place his trust solely in the judiciary.
Recalling his son's entry into politics in 2010, Mahinda Rajapaksa noted that he gave his consent only on the condition that Namal was prepared to face imprisonment and hardship.
Sources revealed that the former President also recounted his own experience of being jailed on baseless charges during the early stages of his political career.
The letter further stated that Mahinda Rajapaksa and his wife Shiranthi Rajapaksa are presently undergoing medical treatment at Nawaloka Hospital, with their other sons Yoshitha and Rohitha attending to their needs.
It is reported that Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) lawmaker D. V. Chanaka delivered the letter to Namal during a recent appearance by the remanded MP in Parliament.
