Sri Lanka's Rumesh Tharanga has surged to top spot in the men's javelin throw world rankings, becoming the first athlete from the island nation to lead the global standings in the discipline.
The 23-year-old reached the summit with 1,354 ranking points following a gold medal performance at the recent Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.
According to the latest World Athletics rankings, Tharanga moved ahead of Germany's Julian Weber (1,348 points) and Grenada's Anderson Peters (1,333 points).
Tharanga clinched gold in Glasgow with an 89.75-metre effort, defeating a stellar field that included former Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra of India.
