CSE opens higher as benchmark index gains 66 points

The Colombo Stock Exchange (CSE) opened on a positive note on Tuesday (27), supported by gains in major blue-chip stocks and strong quarter-three corporate earnings.

The benchmark All Share Price Index gained 66.28 points to stand at 19,706.84 during early trade in Colombo, representing a 0.34 per cent rise, while the liquid S&P SL20 index advanced 0.16 per cent to reach 5,610.60.

Capital goods led early market activity, helping generate an overall turnover of Rs. 123.52 million.

Key share price gains by Dialog Axiata, Commercial Bank of Ceylon, LAUGFS Gas, and Richard Pieris and Company drove the benchmark index higher.

These upward movements offset declines in other major listings, including Brown & Company, Hayleys, and Union Assurance.

Investor sentiment gained additional support from earnings reports, with JAT Holdings announcing a 38 per cent surge in September quarter net profit to Rs. 344.6 million due to expanding domestic and international sales.

In corporate developments, investor Abishek Sithampalam triggered a mandatory offer for the remaining voting shares of Standard Capital after acquiring a 70.54 per cent controlling stake.

Meanwhile, LAUGFS Gas confirmed ongoing informal talks regarding potential commercial partnerships or the outright sale of its terminal subsidiary at Hambantota port.

The positive opening reflects sustained investor confidence across key industrial, telecom, and corporate sectors despite selective profit-taking in commercial stocks.
