Police Officer Killed by Drunk Driver at Ambalantota Checkpoint

A tragic incident occurred early Thursday in southern Sri Lanka when a police officer on New Year duty was struck and killed by a speeding car at a checkpoint. The crash happened around 2:30 a.m. near the Walawa River bridge in Ambalantota, police reported.

Officers had signaled a car heading toward Ambalantota to stop, but the vehicle ignored commands and rammed into the officers on duty. Police Constable M. Sarath Kumara, 42, a father of two from Suriyawewa–Weeriyagama, was killed in the collision.A Civil Defence Force officer stationed at the checkpoint sustained injuries and was admitted to Ambalantota Government Hospital for treatment.

Authorities later found the car abandoned near Ambalantota town. Both the driver and a passenger were arrested and found to be heavily intoxicated at the time, police said. Investigations into the circumstances of the crash are ongoing.
