GMOA: More Lives Could Have Been Lost in Badulla Bus Accident if Dr. Palitha Hadn’t Been Present

Dr. Sanjeewa Tennakoon, President of the Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA), stated that Dr. Palitha Rajapaksa is a medical officer who, despite having exceeded his official term of service, continued to perform his duties with dedication.

Dr. Tennakoon made these remarks during a media briefing organized to honor Dr. Rajapaksa, who, while off-duty, promptly responded to a bus accident in the Badulla Ella area. Dr. Rajapaksa provided immediate first aid to the injured and ensured their rapid transfer to the hospital. According to Dr. Tennakoon, had Dr. Rajapaksa not acted swiftly at the scene, several more lives could have been at risk.

Dr. Palitha Rajapaksa himself stated that he acted immediately upon receiving information about the accident.

At the media briefing, GMOA Assistant Secretary, Dr. Prabath Sugathadasa, highlighted that upon learning of the accident, all available medical officers in the district were informed, and three teams were organized to provide emergency care at Badulla Hospital. One team remained at the hospital to treat incoming patients, another team ascended the waterfall area to administer rapid first aid and medical attention to the injured, and the third team descended to treat patients scattered across the site.

Dr. Sugathadasa emphasized that the GMOA consistently strives to set an exemplary standard of service to the country and society. Responding to a journalist’s query, he clarified that this acknowledgment of gratitude should be attributed to the GMOA, rather than solely to the Ministry of Health.

The media briefing also addressed prior matters, including the disciplinary inquiry summoning of Dr. Palitha Rajapaksa by the Public Service Commission in connection with statements he made regarding past medicine shortages at Badulla Teaching Hospital.

Several video clips capturing the remarks and observations of all medical officers present during the briefing were subsequently released.
