Former President Maithripala Sirisena has informed the Maligakanda Magistrate’s Court that it was not necessary to provide a statement on his recent claims related to the 2019 Easter Attacks during court proceedings scheduled for tomorrow.
Through a motion presented via his lawyers, the former President had informed that it was not necessary to provide a statement as he had already recorded a statement with the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) in this regard.
The Maligakanda Magistrate’s Court had ordered Maithripala Sirisena to make a statement in court tomorrow (Apr 04) on his recent comments over the Easter Sunday bomb attacks.
The court issued the order after the CID had reported the relevant facts to the court, on the instructions of the Attorney General, following the recording of a five-hour statement from Sirisena.
In March, the former President had claimed that he was aware of who really carried out the 2019 Easter Sunday Terror attacks and that he was prepared to disclose the information to the judiciary.
Minister of Public Security Tiran Alles had immediately ordered a probe to be conducted into the claims, after which the CID had recorded a statement from Sirisena.
In his statement to the CID, the former President had reportedly revealed the Indian espionage agency Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) had masterminded the Easter attacks.
Naming a particular Indian diplomat stationed in Colombo then, Sirisena further said that the reason was said to be because Sri Lanka had not considered handing over India any projects.
Sirisena’s statement has caused an outcry among local politicians and the Catholic Church, who have warned of a possible diplomatic crisis with India.
