Leader of the Opposition Sajith Premadasa has urged decisive legal action and a unified national response to curb wildlife crimes following the discovery of a dead wild tusker in North Central Sri Lanka.
The statement followed the discovery by wildlife officials of an elephant carcass with its left tusk missing in a forested area near a paddy field adjacent to Kayangollawa Wewa in Kahatagasdigiliya.
A joint team comprising the Kahatagasdigiliya Wildlife Office, Divulwewa Police, and the Sri Lanka Army has initiated a full inquiry into the case.
Investigators believe the animal had been dead for a considerable period before discovery and suspect illegal poachers forcibly removed the tusk.
Labelling those responsible as environmental terrorists, Premadasa urged all national stakeholders to unite in bringing the perpetrators to justice under the strictest legal provisions.
The incident occurs less than four weeks after the death of the famous tusker Kavantissa, intensifying widespread public alarm over the safety of the country's dwindling wild elephant population.
The latest tragedy underscores the urgent need for a comprehensive national strategy to combat poaching and secure critical elephant habitats across Sri Lanka.
