A former member of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), who was deported to Sri Lanka after completing a 10-year prison sentence in India, has been released by the Mallakam Magistrate’s Court following his arrest at Bandaranaike International Airport, according to the Police Media Division.
The 50-year-old man, a resident of Masiyapitti in Sandilipay, Jaffna, was arrested by Indian security forces in 2015 over his involvement in efforts to reorganise the LTTE.
He was subsequently tried before an Indian court, found guilty and sentenced to 10 years in prison. After serving his sentence, he was deported to Sri Lanka.
According to police, officers of the Counterterrorism and Investigation Division took him into custody on the night of October 26, 2026, when he arrived at Bandaranaike International Airport in Katunayake.
A 72-hour detention order was obtained to allow investigators to conduct further inquiries into the matter.
The suspect was later presented before the Mallakam Magistrate’s Court on October 29, 2026, and was released by the court.
The case is scheduled to be taken up again on November 12, 2026.
