Opposition seeks PSC to investigate circumstances surrounding death of 'Kavanthissa'

Sri Lanka’s opposition lawmakers have moved to establish a parliamentary inquiry into the death of the famed tusker Kavanthissa.

Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa, alongside several fellow parliamentarians, signed a joint motion in Parliament on Wednesday (20) to request the immediate appointment of a Special Parliamentary Select Committee.

Public concern over the preservation of the island's wildlife heritage has intensified following the demise of the revered animal.

The proposed PSC will be tasked with conducting a thorough probe into the precise circumstances leading to the elephant's death, while evaluating whether state agencies and relevant authorities discharged their statutory duties effectively.

Opposition MPs emphasised that establishing the PSC is essential to fixing administrative accountability, addressing potential lapses in conservation oversight, and securing justice for Kavathissa.
