A section of the pathway leading to the Sri Pada sacred site has been blocked after soil and vegetation from a rock face near the summit collapsed due to heavy rainfall.
According to the Nallathanniya Police, the landslide has obstructed a section of the Nallathanniya-Sri Pada route leading towards the upper shrine.
Nallathanniya Police Station Chief Inspector R. Niroshan said the collapse occurred near the ‘Ehela Kanuwa’ area, where a similar earth slip involving soil and plant growth had been reported previously.
He said the fallen soil and plant debris had covered part of the steps leading to the Sri Pada Maluwa, affecting movement along that section of the route.
Although the annual Sri Pada pilgrimage season has concluded, police said visitors, including local and foreign tourists travelling to the summit during the off-season, can continue their journey using the Ratnapura route via Idikatu Pahana.
Authorities are expected to remove the debris and clear the affected area once weather conditions improve, police said.
