The Department of Meteorology has warned that rainy and windy conditions are expected to intensify across parts of Sri Lanka from tomorrow (06), with heavy rainfall exceeding 100 millimetres likely in several areas as the southwest monsoon strengthens.
According to the department, the unsettled weather is expected to affect the southwestern parts of the island over the next few days.
Showers or thundershowers are forecast intermittently in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and North-Western provinces, as well as in the Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Galle and Matara districts.
The department said rainfall above 100 millimetres is likely in some areas of the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in the Kandy, Nuwara Eliya and Galle districts.
Meanwhile, showers or thundershowers may develop in parts of the Ampara, Batticaloa and Monaragala districts after 2.00 p.m.
Strong winds with speeds of around 40 to 50 kilometres per hour are also expected at times in the North Central, Sabaragamuwa, Southern, Central and North-Western provinces.
The public has been advised to take necessary precautions to minimise possible damage caused by temporary strong winds and lightning associated with thundershowers.
