Sri Lanka Air Force javelin thrower Corporal Rumesh Tharanga has been promoted to the rank of Sergeant following his historic gold medal achievement at the 2026 Commonwealth Games.
The promotion was presented today (05) at the Air Force Headquarters by Air Force Commander Air Marshal Bandu Edirisinghe, who commended Tharanga for his outstanding performance and his role in bringing recognition to Sri Lanka.
Tharanga delivered a record-breaking performance at the Commonwealth Games, securing the gold medal in the men’s javelin throw event with an impressive throw of 89.75 metres at the Scotstoun Stadium in Glasgow.
In appreciation of his achievement, the Air Force Commander also presented Tharanga with a special financial reward. Cash rewards were also awarded to his coach Tony Prasanna and physiotherapist Corporal Chandima Gurusinghe for their support and contribution to the athlete’s success.
Meanwhile, national athletes Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage and Palitha Bandara returned to Sri Lanka on August 4 after securing gold and silver medals respectively at the 2026 Commonwealth Games held in Glasgow, Scotland.
Rumesh Tharanga claimed the gold medal in the men’s javelin throw event, while Palitha Bandara won the silver medal in the men’s para discus throw event, bringing further honour to the country.
