Court of Appeal to Rule on Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s Easter Attack Petition on September 22

The Court of Appeal today fixed September 22 to deliver its order on a writ petition filed by former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa seeking an order to prevent his arrest in connection with investigations into the 2019 Easter Sunday terror attacks.

The court will determine on that date whether the petition should proceed further or be dismissed at the preliminary stage.

The matter was taken up before a two-judge bench comprising Court of Appeal President Justice Rohantha Abeysuriya and Justice Sarath Dissanayake.

During today’s hearing, counsel representing both the petitioner and the respondents concluded their oral submissions before the bench.

In his petition, Rajapaksa has named Inspector General of Police Priyantha Weerasooriya, Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Director Shani Abeysekera, the Officer-in-Charge of the CID’s Special Investigations Unit, and the Attorney General as respondents.
