Supreme Court dismisses FR petition against gender change circular

The Supreme Court has dismissed without hearing a Fundamental Rights petition that sought an order to invalidate an official circular allowing individuals in the country to legally alter their gender identity.

The petition was filed by retired disabled Sri Lanka Air Force Warrant Officer Shantha Jayathilake.

The named incumbent President Anura Kumara Dissanayake alongside former Presidents Maithripala Sirisena and Ranil Wickremesinghe among its respondents.

This decision reinforces existing state policy on legal identity recognition, safeguarding human rights protections and preventing legal regressions that could impact Sri Lanka's standing on fundamental rights indicators.
