Death Toll in Renewed Negombo Prison Unrest Rises to 25, Over 100 Injured

The death toll from the renewed violence at Negombo Prison has climbed to 25, police confirmed, following a fresh outbreak of unrest at the facility this morning (06).

According to police, those killed include five prison officials and 20 inmates. Authorities also reported that more than 100 people have been injured during the clashes, with several of the seriously wounded being transferred to the Colombo National Hospital for urgent medical treatment.

The latest violence erupted despite authorities having restored order after a deadly confrontation that broke out at the prison yesterday. However, a tense situation resurfaced this morning, prompting security forces to respond once again to contain the unrest.

Initial investigations indicate that yesterday's violence began at around 1.00 p.m. following a confrontation between a group of remand prisoners and another group of convicted inmates serving prison sentences.

The earlier clash left two inmates dead and 38 others injured, all of whom were admitted to hospital for treatment.

Police said the situation remains under close observation as security measures have been intensified within the prison, while investigations are continuing to determine the circumstances that led to the renewed outbreak of violence.
