The Department of Meteorology says the Southwest Monsoon is gradually establishing across Sri Lanka, bringing an expected increase in rainfall over the southwestern parts of the island in the coming days.
According to the latest forecast, showers or thundershowers are expected at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and North-Western provinces, as well as in the districts of Galle, Matara, Kandy and Nuwara-Eliya. Some of these areas may experience fairly heavy rainfall exceeding 75 mm.
Meanwhile, a few showers or thundershowers could also develop in parts of the Uva and Eastern provinces after 1.00 p.m., the Met. Department noted.
Fairly strong winds ranging between 30 to 40 kmph are also expected at times over the western slopes of the central hills, along with the Northern, North-Central, North-Western and Southern provinces, including the Trincomalee district.
Authorities have urged the public to remain cautious and take necessary precautions to reduce the risk of damage from temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers as monsoon conditions continue to strengthen across the island.
