A minor flood warning has been issued for several low-lying areas along the Kelani River after heavy rainfall of nearly 300 mm was recorded in the river’s upper catchment areas, according to the Irrigation Department.
The department said an analysis of current weather conditions and water level readings from hydrological gauging stations in the Kelani River Basin indicates that a minor flood situation is likely to develop within the next 24 hours in vulnerable parts of the Kelani River valley.
Areas identified as being at risk include the Divisional Secretariat Divisions of Ruwanwella, Seethawaka, Dompe, Dehiovita, Eheliyagoda, Yatiyantota and Bulathkohupitiya.
Residents living in low-lying areas and motorists travelling through these locations have been urged to remain vigilant and exercise extreme caution as water levels continue to rise.
Authorities further warned that if heavy rainfall continues, flood conditions could spread to downstream areas of the Kelani River valley beyond Hanwella.
Disaster Management officials have been advised to take the necessary precautionary measures in response to the developing situation.
