South-West Monsoon Gains Strength, Bringing Rain and Strong Winds Across Sri Lanka

The South-West monsoon is gradually establishing over Sri Lanka, with rain and gusty winds expected to affect several parts of the island, according to the Department of Meteorology.

Weather officials said showers are expected at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and North-Western provinces, as well as in the districts of Galle, Matara, Kandy and Nuwara Eliya today, with fairly heavy rainfall exceeding 50 mm likely in some areas.

Several spells of showers are also forecast for the Northern Province and the Anuradhapura District.

Meanwhile, showers or thundershowers may develop in a few places in the Uva Province and in the districts of Ampara and Batticaloa after 2.00 p.m.

The Meteorology Department further warned that fairly strong winds of 30 to 40 kmph could occur at times over the western slopes of the central hills and in the Northern, North-Central, North-Western and Southern provinces.

Authorities have urged the public to take necessary precautions to minimize damage from temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers as the seasonal monsoon strengthens across the country.
