Police Warn Public of Fraudulent Mobile Scam Misusing SriLankan Airlines Name

Sri Lanka Police has issued an urgent warning to the public over a financial fraud operation being carried out under the name of SriLankan Airlines, with scammers reportedly targeting individuals through WhatsApp.

According to the police, fraudsters are contacting victims while falsely claiming to represent the national airline and directing them to download a mobile application titled ‘SriLankan.apk’ through three fake websites.

Authorities stated that the application functions as a Trojan horse, giving criminals remote access to victims’ mobile phones. Through this unauthorized access, scammers are able to obtain highly sensitive personal information stored on the devices.

Investigators further revealed that the fraudsters exploit access to mobile banking applications to illegally transfer funds to other accounts. This is reportedly done by capturing one-time passwords (OTPs), bank account details, and other authentication information required to authorize transactions.

Police have identified several phone numbers believed to be linked to the scam, including 077 45 58 361, 011 77 71 979, 074 11 42 208, 077 57 91 209, and 074 32 68 200.

Authorities noted an increase in such incidents, particularly targeting people seeking quick financial benefits, and strongly urged the public to remain alert and avoid downloading applications or accessing websites sent through suspicious messages.

The police have called on citizens to exercise caution and report any similar attempts to prevent further financial losses.
